Friday, February 1st, 2008

I don’t know if you’ve heard about this, but Microsoft has offered to pay $44.6B for Yahoo. Now this deal isn’t set in stone yet, but it may pay to review the MSN search algorithms since they are pretty different from Google. If they do wind up purchasing Yahoo, Microsoft will finally be able to offer Google some competition. More details will come out as events run their course. For those of you that want to know more, this article gives a real good overview of what to expect with this change, and what webmasters should be doing to keep on top of their SEO.

Important questions such as "Have 301 redirects been put into place? Is the robots.txt file authored to allow adequate crawling? Are there any broken links?" must be addressed and answered prior to moving forward.

Because its important for every business owner to be vaguely familiar with SEO and SEM terms(especially when negotiating or hiring an SEO firm), we have supplied our viewers with a nifty little chart to help along the way.

Make it Meaningful!

Its important to try to include your key word or words in your chosen domain name.  For example, if you are a candle retailer, a good name would be www.toledocandles.com or www.candlesandmore.com.  You can also use a domain name for your company, and have both pointing towards your website.

Most people have no idea what a landing page is, but if you are trying to supplement your optimization using pay per click (ppc) advertising, it is something that can prove vital to your success. Instead of sending your potential customers straight to your homepage, why not send them to a specially created page that is exactly about what they were searching for? Landing pages let you present the customer with what they want to know without making them find it themselves on your site.  The quicker a customer can find what they’re looking for, the more likely they are to stay on your site.

On your landing page you can leave out any extraneous information and focus solely on what the customer wants to know. Another benefit of these pages is that different ppc keywords can go to different landing pages, thus letting you track how many click-throughs you get for each page. Being able to see what pages are effective and which ones are not, allows for further customization and more success for your business. It may seem like a lot of work at first, but spending an hour or two carefully creating a landing page will be time well spent when your ppc advertising starts paying for itself.

Make your title stand out to search engines!

Put your keywords in the title of your page. The closer they are to the beginning of your title the better. This shows the search engine that your page has something to do with this keyword. Also, when you look at the code for your page, make sure your <title> tag is the first tag after <head>. This gives your keywords even more prominence for the search engine.

Search Engine Optimization: Tip of the Day

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Tip of the Day:  If you only purchase and registered your domain name for anything under 4 years, go back to your registrar and renew your URL!  Search engines like Yahoo and Google automatically give higher rankings to those domain names that are registered for 4+ years!  Renewing your domain name should cost you NO MORE than $10.00 per year (often times, less) so before you renew, make sure your web host or registrar is giving you a fair price.
